Best Filming Locations in Alaska

A State of Locations

Alaska offers more visual variety within a single state than most countries contain within their entire borders. Glaciers, Arctic tundra, temperate rainforest, volcanic terrain, coastal fjords, mountain ranges, river systems, and cities set against wilderness backdrops. Every region looks and feels different. Here is an overview of the major filming environments, with links to detailed pages for each.

Cities and Towns

Anchorage — Alaska's largest city and logistics hub. Airport gateway, crew base, equipment sourcing, and urban-meets-wilderness environments. Chugach State Park begins at the city's edge.

Juneau — Alaska's capital and busiest cruise port. Mendenhall Glacier, Tongass National Forest, whale watching, and a colorful downtown waterfront.

Fairbanks — Interior Alaska's capital. Northern lights, extreme cold, midnight sun, and gateway to the Arctic.

Valdez — Prince William Sound, Columbia Glacier, record snowfall, and heliskiing terrain.

Homer — Kachemak Bay, the Homer Spit, and gateway to bear viewing at Katmai and Lake Clark.

Seward — Exit Glacier, Kenai Fjords National Park, marine wildlife, and expedition cruise port.

Kodiak — Kodiak brown bears, commercial fishing, Coast Guard, and remote island terrain.

Nome — Bering Sea coast, Iditarod finish line, gold mining, and Arctic tundra.

Regions

Southeast Alaska — Juneau, Sitka, Skagway, Ketchikan, Glacier Bay, Haines, and the Inside Passage. Temperate rainforest, tidewater glaciers, and marine wildlife.

North Slope and Arctic — Arctic Ocean, sea ice, polar bears, Utqiagvik, and Prudhoe Bay. The most extreme production environment in the US.

Denali and the Interior — North America's tallest peak, Denali National Park, Talkeetna, and vast Interior wilderness.

Natural Environments

Glaciers — Over 100,000 glaciers. Tidewater, alpine, valley, and piedmont glaciers accessible year-round.

Ice Caves — Translucent blue ice walls, sculpted corridors, and natural light. Seasonal access with guided entry.

Snow and Winter — Guaranteed snow October through April. Year-round on glaciers. Deep powder, frozen lakes, and snow-covered towns.

Northern Lights — Visible 200+ nights per year from Fairbanks. September through April.

Wildlife — Brown bears, polar bears, wolves, caribou, moose, eagles, whales, sea otters, and salmon.
