From late May through late July, Alaska experiences extreme extended daylight. Anchorage gets 19+ hours of light on the summer solstice. Fairbanks gets nearly 22 hours of direct sunlight, with civil twilight filling the remaining hours so it never truly gets dark. On the North Slope, the sun does not set at all for approximately 82 days.
For film production, this is a game-changer.
Extended Shooting Days
Forget the 12-hour day with a race to wrap before sunset. In June and July, you can shoot for 18-20 hours without losing light. This compresses production schedules dramatically. What might take four shoot days in the Lower 48 can be accomplished in two or three in Alaska during peak summer.
Extended Golden Hour
In lower latitudes, golden hour lasts 20-30 minutes. In Alaska during summer, the sun tracks along the horizon for hours, producing golden-quality light that persists throughout the evening and early morning. A DP can shoot golden-hour content for three or four hours instead of racing against a 20-minute window.
Scheduling Flexibility
Bad light at 2pm? Wait two hours and it will be different. Overcast morning? The afternoon might clear. With 19+ hours of usable light, you have scheduling flexibility that does not exist anywhere else in the United States.
Crew Rest
The light never stops but your crew needs to. It is easy to push too hard when there is always another hour of shootable light. We build schedules that account for crew rest and turnaround times, particularly on multi-day shoots where fatigue compounds.
Sleeping
Blackout curtains in lodging are essential. Crew members not accustomed to sleeping in full daylight will struggle without them. We ensure lodging accommodations address this.
Heat and Bugs
Alaska summers can reach the 70s and occasionally 80s. Mosquitoes and other insects are active from June through August, particularly in Interior and wetland areas. We plan around these variables.
Fairbanks offers the most extreme midnight sun conditions in accessible Alaska. Denali provides midnight sun over North America's tallest peak. The North Slope offers true 24-hour sun for weeks. Anchorage and Southeast Alaska provide long days with slightly more conventional evening light transitions.
Midnight sun pairs naturally with Alaska's summer wildlife activity, glacier access, and adventure sports content. Contact us to plan your summer production schedule.
