The federal government manages more land in Alaska than in any other state. Here is how to navigate commercial filming permits on NPS, USFS, BLM, and FWS lands.

Filming on Federal Land in Alaska

Two-Thirds of Alaska Is Federal Land

Alaska has more federal land than any other state in the US. National Parks, National Forests, National Wildlife Refuges, and BLM-managed lands cover approximately 222 million acres, nearly two-thirds of the state's total area. Many of Alaska's most cinematic filming locations sit on federal land.

This means that a significant percentage of commercial filming in Alaska requires federal permits. Each agency has different requirements, timelines, and fee structures. We manage the full federal permitting process for every production we support through our permitting services.

National Park Service (NPS)

Alaska has eight national parks, the largest concentration in the country. Denali, Glacier Bay, Kenai Fjords, Katmai, Lake Clark, Wrangell-St. Elias, Gates of the Arctic, and Kobuk Valley.

Commercial filming in any National Park requires a Special Use Permit issued by the park superintendent. Applications should be submitted 4-8 weeks in advance for straightforward shoots. Complex productions involving aircraft, large crews, or sensitive wildlife areas may require longer lead times. Fees are based on crew size and scope. Some parks require an NPS monitor on set.

Still photography involving only handheld equipment and small crews may be exempt from permitting requirements, but any use of tripods, lighting, models, or props on NPS land requires a permit.

US Forest Service (USFS)

The Tongass National Forest in Southeast Alaska (17 million acres) and the Chugach National Forest in Southcentral (5.4 million acres) are the two largest national forests in the United States.

Commercial filming permits are issued by the local ranger district. USFS permits are generally faster and less restrictive than NPS permits. Lead times of 2-4 weeks are typical. Fees vary by district and production scope.

Bureau of Land Management (BLM)

BLM manages approximately 72 million acres in Alaska, primarily in the Interior and Western regions. The Dalton Highway corridor, large sections of the Interior, and remote Western Alaska fall under BLM management.

Commercial filming on BLM land requires a permit. BLM is generally the most flexible federal agency for filming permits, with shorter lead times and fewer restrictions than NPS or FWS.

US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS)

Alaska has 16 National Wildlife Refuges covering over 76 million acres. The Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge, Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Yukon Delta, Izembek, and others contain some of the most important wildlife habitat in North America.

Commercial filming on refuge lands requires a Special Use Permit. Some refuges restrict filming during sensitive periods such as nesting season, denning season, or migration. Wildlife approach distance regulations are strictly enforced. NOAA marine mammal approach regulations also apply on coastal refuge lands.

How We Handle Federal Permits

We know the contacts at every relevant federal office in the state. We know which parks require early applications, which ranger districts process permits quickly, and which refuge managers are receptive to commercial filming. We file applications, coordinate with agency staff, manage fee payments, and ensure all conditions are met before your crew steps onto federal land. This is standard for every production we support as service producer.
