Finnish Lapland has aggressively positioned itself as a filming destination for productions seeking snow, northern lights, and Arctic environments. Their film commission explicitly markets Lapland as a location that can double for Alaska. The question is: why would you use a double when you can use the original?
Scale
Finland is roughly the size of Montana. Alaska is more than twice the size of Texas. The terrain variety, the distances, and the sheer visual scale of Alaska's landscapes dwarf anything Lapland can offer. When your creative calls for vast, untouched wilderness extending to the horizon, Alaska delivers at a magnitude Finland cannot match.
Wildlife
Lapland has reindeer. Alaska has brown bears, polar bears, wolves, caribou, moose, bald eagles, humpback whales, orcas, and the densest wildlife populations in North America. If your production involves wildlife, there is no comparison.
Glaciers and Ice
Finland has no glaciers. Alaska has over 100,000. Glacier filming, ice caves, and tidewater glacier calving sequences are available year-round in Alaska and simply do not exist in Finland.
Mountains
Finland's highest point is 1,324 meters. Alaska has 17 of the 20 highest peaks in the United States, including Denali at 20,310 feet. If your frame needs vertical drama, Alaska provides it.
Domestic Production
For US-based productions, Alaska means domestic flights, no customs, no work visas, no currency exchange, no VAT, and same-day time zone communication with LA. Finland means transatlantic freight, EU work permits, and a 10-hour time difference.
Film Incentives
Finland offers a 25% cash rebate on qualifying production spend. Alaska currently has no active incentive program, though legislation is pending. For productions where the incentive is the deciding factor, Finland has an advantage on paper. However, Alaska's no-income-tax, no-sales-tax environment and competitive crew rates often close the gap.
Flat Snow Landscapes
Lapland excels at flat, forested, snow-covered terrain with clean horizons. If your creative specifically requires that environment without mountains, Lapland delivers it well. Alaska offers this too in the Interior and North Slope, but it is not the state's most accessible terrain.
If your production needs snow, northern lights, or Arctic terrain and your team is based in the US, Alaska is the smarter choice. You get bigger landscapes, more dramatic terrain, better wildlife, real glaciers, and zero international logistics. The production infrastructure to support your crew is here.
