Alaska's formal film tax credit program operated from 2008 to 2015 and was repealed due to structural issues with how the program was designed. There is currently no active transferable tax credit or rebate program for film and television production in Alaska.
However, a new bill is in front of the legislature right now. HB 113, currently in the House Finance Committee of the 34th Legislature, proposes to reinstate a film production incentive program. For a detailed breakdown of the bill and its implications, see our page on HB 113 and the proposed Alaska film incentive.
For context on why the original program was repealed and what structural changes would need to happen for a new program to succeed, see our history of Alaska's film incentive program and our analysis of how a redesigned program should work.
Regardless of the incentive landscape, Alaska remains one of the most active production destinations in the country. Here is why.
Unmatched Locations
No other state offers the combination of glaciers, Arctic terrain, volcanic landscapes, temperate rainforest, massive wildlife, midnight sun, and northern lights within a single production footprint.
No State Income Tax or Sales Tax
Alaska has no state income tax and no statewide sales tax. This creates natural savings on crew payroll and equipment purchases compared to states with high tax burdens, independent of any formal incentive program.
Competitive Local Rates
Alaska crew and vendor rates are competitive with major production markets. Combined with the state's tax-free environment, productions often find their effective below-the-line costs compare favorably to incentive-adjusted budgets in other states.
Year-Round Production Value
Alaska offers dramatically different visual environments across seasons. Winter ice and snow, spring breakup, summer midnight sun, and fall tundra colors provide four distinct production windows, each with unique cinematic value. Any team can affordably shoot snow, glacier, or extreme winter content year-round without leaving the United States.
Domestic Production Advantage
Productions considering international snow and ice destinations like Iceland, Norway, or Finland should consider that Alaska offers comparable or superior environments without international freight, customs, work visas, or currency exchange. See our full comparison: Why Film in Alaska Instead of Iceland.
Spend Documentation
We provide detailed, itemized documentation of all Alaska-based production expenditures. If incentive programs are reinstated or if your production needs verified spend records for network or studio accounting, our documentation is audit-ready.
State-Certified Wrap Accounting
We coordinate state-certified wrap accounting services for productions that require formal verification of their Alaska spend. See our production budgeting and wrap accounting page for details.
Legislative Updates
We actively monitor Alaska's legislative landscape for movement on film incentive programs and advise our clients accordingly. We maintain the most informed perspective on Alaska film policy of any production company in the state.
